Ivory Coast – Yao’s Struggle & Success in Sustainable Farming

Yao Kouassi, a 38-year-old farmer from San Pedro, Ivory Coast, inherited a small cocoa farm from his father. For years, he followed traditional farming methods, but climate change and soil depletion led to declining yields and financial struggles.

Desperate for a solution, Yao connected with Cocoa Connect’s sustainable farming initiative, where he learned agroforestry techniques, organic fertilization, and shade-growing methods to restore his land. With the support of Cocoa Connect’s eco-conscious buyers, Yao transitioned to fully sustainable cocoa production, securing higher prices and long-term contracts.

Now, Yao’s farm is a model for sustainability in his region. His improved yield has boosted his income, and his farming methods are helping combat deforestation. He hopes to inspire future generations of Ivorian farmers to prioritize environmental responsibility.

Sustainability is not just about farming—it’s about protecting our future. Thanks to fair trade and eco-friendly methods, my land is thriving again.

 Yao Kouassi
